Bitcoin Ordinals upgrade accused of being reckless and harmful to BRC-20 community
[ad_1]
On Tuesday, Domo, the creator of the BRC-20 standard, asserted that the UniSat BRC-20 Market Ordinals update to the Bitcoin protocol is insecure and is in fact a fork of the BRC-20 protocol. He said the proposed plan could also be flawed and give the company too much control.
Bitcoin developer stated:
“The rush to update BRC-20 is reckless, ignores peer indexers, and could harm the BRC-20 user community.”
Recognizing the serious implications and valuations involved, I believe that rushing these updates into BRC20 would be reckless, disregard its peer indexers, and potentially harm the wider BRC20 user community. The 0.8/0.9 incident highlights the complexity of integration… https://t.co/RccP7bYdVY

Domo’s comment was in response to this thread tweet Plans for the upcoming Ordinals update from UniSat.
“UniSat will continue to upgrade Ordinals Jubilee, confirming that BRC-20 will remain part of Ordinals and will not be split into a separate agreement.”
The company further revealed that the white paper will be released on January 31.
Launched in April 2023, UniSat is the company behind the Google Chrome extension and wallet of the same name that provides a BRC-20 token management solution on the Bitcoin blockchain.
However, critics of the UniSat plan say the “isolation protocol” the company is referring to is the Domo standard introduced earlier this year.
The latest drama surrounding Ordinals comes after Domo Announce Layer-1 Foundation was launched on Monday alongside Bitcoin Ordinals aggregator BestinSlot and Bitcoin wallet developer Oyl Dymanics.
Domo launched the BRC-20 protocol for Bitcoin Ordinals in March, after original developer Casey Rodarmor launched Ordinal Inscriptions in January. The BRC-20 protocol allows users to mint memecoins on the Bitcoin network.
Domo said the Layer-1 Foundation is a non-profit organization that ensures the BRC-20 standard is not “centrally controlled by a company” and maintains an index toolkit to ensure “the security of all assets on BRC20.”
The Layer-1 Foundation believes UniSats’ tweets are causing misunderstanding.
“UniSat will not split with Ordinals, and information from UniSats is leading to a schism between the BRC20 community and Domo’s BRC20 indexer. For security reasons, Domo previously announced that it would not upgrade to the new version until the implementation has been fully coordinated and tested Ordinals; however, UniSat suddenly took a different approach.”
In the blockchain industry, a fork refers to a split in a protocol that results in the creation of a new fork of an existing blockchain. Bitcoin Cash and Bitcoin SV are forks of Bitcoin Core, while Ethereum Classic is a fork of Ethereum.
Forks often occur when the community disagrees on the direction of a project, or when new features or different versions of the protocol are introduced.
Domo explained that the Ordinal Jubilee upgrade is important because most Ordinal updates are backwards compatible, while Jubilee is not.
“The Jubilee upgrade changes the validity of certain inscription types, which affects BRC-20 logic.”
Domo said that one of the problems in launching the BRC-20 protocol fork was the lack of community testing and verification of the protocol.
“There is no time to safely test updates, which can lead to bugs. The community is not even given enough time to coordinate and verify upgrades.”
Therefore, in order to “prioritize the safe operation of the protocol,” Domo asked the BRC-20 community to reject the fork plan proposed by UniSat.
“In responsible standards development, the security and health of the protocol must always come first. Today’s discovery of bugs in the latest version of Ordinals reinforces the need for the community to test, coordinate, and validate over time. Let a single entity take control Standards without taking responsibility would be dangerous.”
UniSat wallet founder Lorenzo disagrees with Domo’s assessment of the BRC-20 situation.
“The Jubilee upgrade is significant for both Ordinals and BRC-20. For Serials, it is an upgrade that frees itself from the burden of the past and reduces unknown activities. For BRC-20, Jubilee sets the stage for future development. A stronger foundation.”
Lorenzo dismissed the idea that the Jubilee upgrade would cause technical problems for the BRC-20.
“We believe the long-term benefits to the entire ecosystem make the Jubilee upgrade worthwhile.”
Lorenzo said UniSat initially agreed to freeze at version 0.9, but this was only a temporary measure. When it became clear that the freeze could develop into a permanent separation from the serial number, concerns arose, threatening future compatibility.
In response, UniSat chose to go its own way, Lorenzo said.
“Recognizing the L1F team’s lack of initiative in upgrading frozen version 0.9, UniSat wishes to move forward. Despite the potential impact, UniSat remains committed to retaining BRC-20 on Ordinals to facilitate seamless interoperability with other protocols on the same platform .”
Lorenzo said UniSat is prioritizing the successful deployment of the Jubilee upgrade.
“If the BRC20 fork was the goal of the project, we would have done so at a more favorable time in the past 10 months. UniSat, as a service provider, prioritizes the interaction between BRC-20 and other protocols within the Ordinals common platform. Operational.”
Lorenzo added that he understands Domo’s reluctance to “catch up on the numbers.”
Lorenzo said UniSat specializes in creating and delivering solutions such as Ordinals, and their approach has paid off over the past year and is expected to continue to be successful.
“Building tools and services on top of existing protocols is more valuable than forking to any single protocol. This approach has proven effective over the past 12 months and will continue to prove its value in the near future.” Lorenzo concluded.
