Scam involving Nike and RTFKT targets OpenSea users

Scammers are targeting users of OpenSea, the leading non-fungible token (NFT) marketplace, with a new phishing scam promising an exclusive minting event involving US footwear company Nike and RTFKT, a big name in the NFT space.
MasterJew.eth, co-founder of the ApeFathersNFT project, was one of the recipients of the scam email. He reminded the public of fraudulent information on X and called for attention.
The email purportedly from OpenSea is titled: “Exclusive Invitation: RTFKT x Nike Dunk Genesis RBOT CRYPTOKICKS Minting Event!”
The winner is said to be one of the 400 lucky customers selected to participate in RTFKT’s partnership with Nike to launch a limited edition NFT. The email contains a link to “Mint RTEKT Now” which (please be careful with receipts) could lead to malicious websites trying to steal the user’s wallet information or funds.
The email also thanks the recipient for being a part of the OpenSea community and expresses excitement about upcoming events. It ends with a signature claiming to be from OpenSea and contains a copyright notice.
However, the email has several red flags that indicate it is a scam. OpenSea is the largest and most popular NFT marketplace, allowing users to buy, sell and create digital collectibles.
Due to its importance, it has been the target of multiple phishing attacks in the past, as scammers try to take advantage of the growing interest and demand for NFTs. Last November, a similar email surfaced aimed at defrauding unsuspecting investors.
Notably, amid escalating concerns at the time, the marketplace confirmed it had not suffered any hacking attacks and advised users not to click on any untrustworthy links. In February 2022, OpenSea suffered a phishing attack result Multiple NFTs worth approximately $2 million were lost.
To curb the prevalence of such losses, OpenSea advises users to be wary of any suspicious emails or direct messages asking them to send funds or connect their wallets.
OpenSea users can report phishing emails to their email provider or the social media platform from which they received such emails. Additionally, they can check OpenSea’s official website for any notices or announcements regarding minting activities or collaborations.
